1. Secure Your Property Immediately:

   • If your house key is lost or stolen, consider staying with a friend or family member until you can change the locks.
   • If your car key is lost or stolen, ensure your car is parked in a safe location until you can get a replacement key.

2. Report the Loss or Theft:

   • If your keys were stolen, file a police report immediately. This documentation may be necessary for insurance purposes or if there are any subsequent issues related to the theft.

3. Replace the Locks or Keys:

   • For your house: Contact a locksmith to change the locks or rekey them. Rekeying means adjusting the lock mechanism so that the old key no longer works, but you don’t have to replace the entire lock.
   • For your car: Contact your car dealership, a locksmith, or a specialized auto locksmith service to get a new key made. Some newer cars may require reprogramming of the key fob or immobilizer system.

4. Consider Upgrading Security:

   • If you’re concerned about future incidents, consider upgrading to high-security locks for your home or installing additional security measures like smart locks or a security system.
   • For your car, inquire about additional security features such as steering wheel locks or GPS tracking systems.

5. Change Access Codes or Alarm Codes:

   • If applicable, change any access codes or alarm codes associated with your home security system or electronic locks.

6. Notify Relevant Parties:

   • Notify your insurance company, especially if your keys were stolen, as it might affect your coverage.
   • If your house keys were on a keychain with identification, notify your employer or any other relevant parties who may need to know.

7. Be Vigilant:

   • Remain vigilant for any suspicious activity around your home or car following the loss or theft of your keys.

By taking these steps promptly, you can minimize the risk associated with lost or stolen keys and ensure the ongoing security of your property.
